Thank you for reaching out to the York Region Concussion Clinic. We were started to help patients struggling in getting the necessary specialized care in recovering from their concussions. We are enthusiastic about helping you in getting over this hurdle.

Our Program

Our program is an aggressive, evidence-based, comprehensive, multidisciplinary and up-to-date management program.
It is quarterbacked by a sports physician who has specialized training and experience in concussion management. Some of the advantages in having an MD-centered program include:

· Assessment/management of your condition in the context of your pre-existing general medical status and past medical history

· Broad knowledge and experience in many vital areas that relate to concussion including: headaches, fatigue, sleep problems, mood disorders, neck injuries and visual and vestibular abnormalities.

· For most purposes (i.e., school, sports, work) a diagnosis of concussion should be made by an MD and return to activities should also be authorized by an MD

· Can directly order imaging and investigations if and when required

· Can directly arrange for referrals if and when required

· Can prescribe medication if and when indicated

· Most MD services are covered by OHIP

Concussions are managed in an interdisciplinary setting. Our center consists of an occupational therapist, a chiropractor with extensive training in many facets in concussion rehabilitation including vestibular therapy, a physiotherapist, a dietitian, an audiologist, a nurse and several specialists – neurologist, otolaryngologist, orthopaedic surgeon and internist. We also have a larger network of allied healthcare workers that are often involved in care (optometrist, psychologist, other medical specialists, etc.).

Visits with the sports physician are covered by OHIP. OHIP does not yet cover the services of allied healthcare workers or computerized neurocognitive testing which are integral parts of concussion assessment and rehabilitation.

Currently we are providing our services to patients that are 7-years-old and above.

Accessing Our Program

This service has received overwhelming demand from the community and as such, it is necessary to triage patients appropriately. This program has also been started with the intention of helping patients in a timely fashion.

To remove delays in accessing our program, we do not require a referral from your family doctor. However, normally when your family doctor refers you to a consultant (i.e., us), he/she prepares a report outlining required information. This information is important to assess your suitability for the program as well as to appropriately triage your appointment. If found suitable for our program, we will require you to submit this information via online questionnaires using our secure and PHIPA-compliant forum which uploads directly into our electronic medical records (EMR). This information remains strictly confidential. It is important for you to fill out the questionnaires completely and accurately to avoid delays.

There is a chance, however, that after reviewing these intake forms we may feel that you are better served by another program based in a hospital’s outpatient setting. If this is the case, we will advise you of the same with specific recommendations. This is the same method of operation used by all consultants and their referring doctors. We advise you to save or print a copy of your completed intake form so that in the event you have been redirected to another service, the information therein will help your family doctor arrange the appropriate referral.

Involving Your Family Doctor

Because of the nature of concussion and its pervasive effect on your health, your family doctor will still be involved and will play an important role in your recovery. If you do not have one or your family doctor is generally inaccessible, you will need to find one or at least a walk-in doctor with whom you have a good rapport who is willing to support you on the road to recovery. Our clinic provides a very specialized service that is not easily accessible elsewhere. Our mission is to support patients by offering them specifically these specialized services. As such, we will require you to sign a consent form authorizing us to share your medical information with your family doctor upon your registration.

We look forward to helping you recover from this injury.
